Gary has 20 years clinical experience as a registered psychologist in a variety of mental health roles including outreach support to those with multiple complex needs, and psychosocial and vocational rehabilitation, and has been providing psychological therapy and counselling in private practice for the past 12 years.
Gary believes that therapy is a journey taken by the client and therapist that involves identifying what has led the person to seek help, while discovering unconscious processes influencing the thoughts, feelings, physiology, impulses, choices and behaviour of the person, and collaborating to achieve the client’s therapeutic goals.
These goals may include: gaining insight regarding what the person is experiencing, emotional distress or symptom alleviation, healing long-held emotional wounds, building self-compassion, confidence and resiliency, development of helpful and healthy patterns to maintain mental health as much as possible over their lifetime, or having the opportunity to explore their experiences and situations in a private, professional setting without experiencing judgement, “advice”, or “you think you’ve got problems, let me tell you about mine”.
Building rapport and collaboration with clients is central to Gary’s sessions as well as making progress, the alliance characterised by digging in and working on hard things together, but always with empathy, acceptance and an absence of blame. Gary incorporates several therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, brief Solution-focused therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
Gary ’s clients would describe him as warm, approachable, respectful and professional.
