If you are like many other people, you probably spend a lot of time thinking about the past or worrying about the future. In other words, you are not living in the moment and embracing your experiences to the full. Mind-wandering appears to be the brain’s default mode, however according to recent research, mind-wandering is a bigger predictor of unhappiness than our actual experiences themselves. The practice of mindfulness has been shown to be an effective way to combat this mind-wandering and shifting it rather to focussing our attention on the present moment.
Mindfulness is a mental state of awareness that involves paying attention to the present moment with openness and flexibility. Mindfulness is a skill that can be developed through practice; meditation is just one way amongst many of cultivating mindfulness.
Our psychologists have developed the highly enjoyable and effective Mindfulness 101 workshop program. This is a six-week group program of two hours per evening session in which a psychologist helps participants develop the psychological skill of mindfulness. The focus of this workshop is on its strong emphasis on practical applications of mindfulness in everyday life. Through hands-on practice, this course will invite you to engage with the group, whilst developing mindful awareness for use in your day-to-day life.
Mindfulness has been widely used to help people manage anxiety, depression, stress, chronic pain and other medical conditions. Other benefits include:
